ドイツのミュンヘンで生まれたパウル・フランケンブルガー。ミュンヘン国立歌劇場でブルーノ・ワルターの助手を務め、その後アウクスブルク市立劇場の楽長を務めました。その後は作曲と教育に専念、歌曲を中心とした作品を書きましたが、1931年、ナチスによってアウクスブルクの楽長の地位を解任されて以降、身に迫る厳しい活動の制限、脅迫、社会的孤立を逃れるために、1933年に当時イギリス委任統治領にあったパレスチナへ亡命。西洋文化において発展途上の地とみなされていたパレスチナでミュンヘン出身の彼は重用され、ヘブライ語の「パウル・ベン＝ハイム」と改名。1948年のイスラエル独立とともに正式に同国の国民となり、多くの業績を遺しました。このアルバムではヴァイオリニスト、リフ・ミグダルを中心とした「イズコール」などの協奏的作品や、ヴァイオリンとピアノのデュオ、歌曲、「無言歌」と題された独奏楽器と弦楽のための作品などが収録されており、これらからは後期ロマン派の音楽に中東の要素を融合させた独自の作風が窺えます。
