いくつかの交響曲で知られるヴェッツ(1875-1935)のクリスマス・オラトリオです。生まれた時代は後期ロマン派に属するものの、「目指したのはブルックナーやワーグナーであっただろう」と想像させる作風が持ち味のヴェッツ。ここでもその方向性は変わることがありません。この作品は1927年から1929年の2年間に渡って書かれ、1929年12月3日に彼自身の指揮で初演されました。その後、ドイツの各都市で演奏されましたが、1945年以降は忘れ去られてしまい、一切演奏の記録はありません。cpoは今までにもヴェッツの作品を取り上げていますが、作曲家の没後75周年に、このオラトリオを録音することで、一層認知度を深めることに成功したといえるでしょう。用いられているテキストや、随所に認められる見事な対位法の処理など、聴きどころ満載。ブルックナー好きはもちろんのこと、典礼音楽好きの方にもたまらない贈り物と言えそうです。
