20世紀最大の名歌手キャスリーン・フェリアー。彼女の歌うこの「マタイ受難曲」は伝説的名演として語り継がれているものです。この録音はDECCAの企画で1947年にセッションが始まったのですが、当時としてはあまりにも大曲であったためか、彼女の契約の関係で年内に録音が完了することはなく、完成はその翌年まで持ち越されました。この入念な準備に裏打ちされた演奏、もちろん完成度の高さには目を見張るものがあります。当時バロック音楽のオーソリティであった指揮者ジェイクスを始め、英国を代表する名歌手たちを総動員したこのバッハは、作曲家の心を伝えるとともに、現代を生きる人々にとっても宝物となることでしょう。
