エリントンは、最初からエリントンだった！」　全く他人の影響というものを感じさせない（つまり、模倣や習作が存在しない）芸術家は希有である。エリントン以外では、ストラヴィンスキー（ただし晩年は古典回帰とやらで「音大生以下」に成り下がった）、武満徹、チャップリン、ジャイアント馬場、くらいしか思いつかない。エリントンの凄さは、飽くなきサウンド追求、これに尽きる。浅草の仏具屋から輸入した木魚（The Mooche でポコポコ鳴ってます）、のどじまんチャイム（Ring Dem Bells）、Creole Love Call では何と女性Ｖｏにｔｐのプランジャー・ミュートのマネをさせてます。凄すぎる！
