大管弦楽を駆使した、かの有名なバレエ音楽三部作もいいですが、ストラヴィンスキーの懐には、小編成の音楽という隠れた宝石があります。その代表株が「兵士の物語」。少ない楽器による乾燥した響きが、ジャズの影響もあいまって、聴き手の脳天に心地良い刺激を与えます。ナクソス盤は台詞（英語）の部分にイギリスの人気俳優３人を起用、演奏共にまさに痛快な出来ばえ。贅沢なカップリングになる協奏曲「ダンバートン・オークス」は、バッハの楽器編成を参考にしているため、”ストラヴィンスキーのブランデンブルク協奏曲”との異名もあるとか。
