日本でもお馴染みのグループ、スコラーズを核とするバロック・アンサンブル、常に最小の人数で最大の効果をあげてきました。大好評で迎えられた「妖精の女王」に続くパーセルの歌劇の録音になります。メキシコ王の地位を奪取していた女王センポアラが自ら命を絶つまでの悲劇を題材にしたこの歌劇は、パーセルの夭折により未完成になり、弟ダニエル作曲による追加幕「マスク」が結婚を祝う性格で突然楽しくなることもあって、内容は一貫しません。しかし、パーセルらしい半音階進行など、天才的な音楽はいつもながら際立っています。
