決してメジャーな名前ではありませんが、クィルターこそ、イギリス近代歌曲の最終兵器と呼んでよいでしょう。シェイクスピアから20世紀に至るまで幅広い時代のテキストを使用した彼の歌曲の特徴は、何よりもまず、魂が奪われそうになるほどの美しいメロディー。旋律美に惚れたピアニストがピアノ独奏曲に編曲してしまったほどの24や、弦楽四重奏団が加わることでピアノ伴奏だけでは表現不可能な世界に踏み込んだ「ジュリアへ」など、どの曲をとっても聴き手を夢中にさせる音楽が並びます。当盤の歌手もピアニストも、クィルター演奏にベストの人選。コリンズ・レーベルの再発売盤です。
