これはヘンデルの純正のオラトリオではありません。ヘンデルの死後、オラトリオ演奏の伝統を継承しようと試みたジョン・クリストファー・スミスが、ヘンデルのオペラや宗教曲などからアリアや合唱を選び（各曲の出典は解説を参照）、スミス自身の音楽も付加、同じくヘンデルと共に仕事をしてきたモレルが旧約聖書「士師記」から題材をとった新しい台本を書き、オラトリオ化したものです。何しろ元の曲がヘンデルだから、アリアの旋律の美しさ、合唱の見事さは折り紙付き。ヘンデルを愛する人なら是非とも聴いておきたい珍品です。独唱、合唱も含めて、演奏の出来も見事です。ライヴ録音。
