その名前からわかるように、キムは韓国移民の子として生まれたアメリカの作曲家ですが、その音楽も純西洋クラシックというよりも、アジアンテイストを帯びたロマンが薫る、神秘的な美しさを持ったものとなっており、極めて個性的と申せましょう。パールマンに捧げられているヴァイオリン協奏曲は、確かに難曲なのですが、名人芸を披瀝するというよりも、美しい旋律を歌ったかと思うと、不可思議なパッセージを弾きまくったりと、謎めいた味わいです。また、「コルネット」はリルケの詩(の英訳)の朗読と音楽を融合させた作品ですが、詩の内容と言葉の抑揚に対する音楽のシンクロぶりには、うならされるものがあります。
