「メサイア」の3年前に書かれたこの「エジプトのイスラエル人」、初演は大失敗だったと伝えられています。理由は、華々しいアリアがなくお目当ての歌手が出なかったせいだ、とか聖書のテキストをそのまま使ったからだとか、様々あるようですが、逆に言えばこれほどまでに合唱に重点の置かれた作品もなく、管弦楽の真に迫る描写も見事過ぎると言えましょう。通常カットされる第1部（キャロライン王妃の葬送アンセムHWV264より流用）も演奏されている貴重な2枚組です。
