ブラジル外務省が主導するプロジェクト「Brasil em Concerto」。19世紀から20世紀にかけて作曲された約100曲の作品をブラジルのオーケストラが演奏、録音するという、これまでになかった大がかりな企画です。このアルバムに登場するアルメイダ・プラドは、20世紀後半から21世紀初頭にかけてブラジルで活躍した作曲家。カマルゴ・グァルニエリから音楽を学んだプラドは、やがてシュトックハウゼンやブーレーズ、リゲティの作品に興味を持ち、奨学金を得てパリに留学。ナディア・ブーランジェに教えを請うとともに、メシアンの神秘主義からも影響を受け、自国のブラジル音楽にこれらのエッセンスを融合させ、ピアノ曲集『カルタス・セレステス＝天体の図表』などに見られる独自の作風を確立しました。このアルバムに収録されている2つの作品は、作曲年代がほぼ20年離れており、彼の異なるスタイルが反映されています。初期の作品「詩人カルロス・マリア・ジ・アラウジョへのささやかなる葬送歌」は若くして命を落とした詩人に捧げる嘆きの調べ。合唱とパーカッションが効果的に用いられたオーケストラのための作品です。対してカンピーナス市立交響楽団設立10周年のために書かれた「オリシャたちの交響曲」はブラジルの伝統的宗教と儀式、大いなる自然への賛美が描かれており、緻密なオーケストレーションと沸き立つようなリズム使用が際立つ作品です。深い森を思わせる神秘的な音色あり、原始的・異教的なリズムとサウンドの炸裂ありで、「春の祭典」のブラジル版と呼べるかもしれません。
