近代建築の三大巨匠の一人、フランク・ロイド・ライトと言えば、わが国でも帝国ホテル新館の設計者として知られています。シカゴの大建築家ルイス・サリヴァンの弟子として頭角を現し、独立後は数多くの建物を設計、草原様式の作品で知られるようになるのです。私生活では夫人と6人の子どもがいたにも関わらず、施工主の妻と深い関係に陥り、そのせいで活動停止を余儀なくされてしまうなどスキャンダラスな面も持っていました。このオペラは、ロイドがサリヴァンから独立した1903年から、全てを捨てて一緒になった愛人チェニーを悲劇の火災で失うまでの波乱に満ちた10年間を描いています。発狂した使用人によって燃やされた家の跡から見つけた上着のポケットに入っていたチェニーの翻訳によって彼は家と自分自身の再建を誓うのです。
