【俊才コーエンと実力派勢によるヘンデル晩期の傑作オラトリオ】英国で揺るぎない名声を確立したヘンデルが晩年、その豊かな技量を注ぎ込んだ傑作オラトリオ『テオドーラ』。作曲家が視力を失う直前の時期に仕上げられ1750年3月に初演されたものの、少し前にロンドンを襲った地震の影響で重要な顧客たちが客席にいない状態での上演は失敗に終わりました。当時の英国におけるオラトリオの通例を離れた殉教物語も理解されませんでしたが、その音楽的充実は後にヘンデル声楽作品が見直されてゆく中で評価が高まり、今や多くの全曲録音にも恵まれている一作となっています。その上でなお、古楽器演奏の名盤群で知られるALPHAが世に問う新録音は、英国を中心に世界的な注目を集めるジョナサン・コーエン率いるアルカンジェロと気鋭歌手陣によるもので、瑞々しく音楽愛に貫かれた名演に仕上がっています。ローマ帝国末期、ヴィーナス信仰を受け入れずキリスト教徒として命を全うする悲運の女性テオドーラを演じるのは、サイモン・ラトルやキリル・ペトレンコとの共演でも知られロマン派や近代作品の録音でも高い評価を博しているルイーズ・アドラー。ヒロインに寄り添うディディムス役ではドーヴァー海峡の両岸で活躍をみせるティム・ミードが細やかな作品解釈を雄弁な歌唱へと昇華させ、他のソリストたちと共に起伏豊かなドラマを盛り上げます。古楽器演奏の場のニュアンスを的確に捉えるユーグ・デショー＆アリーヌ・ブロンディオらALPHA古参のエンジニアたちの仕事も見事なもので、ホルンやトランペットも加わる色彩豊かなオーケストラの活躍も際立ち、劇音楽に通じたコーエンならではの聴きごたえある音楽展開を何度でも聴き確かめたくなるに違いありません。
