イギリスの現代作曲家ロイ・ヒートン・スミス(1928-)の作品集。リチャード・ホールから作曲、ウィリアム・ウォルトンの弟ノエルからピアノを学んだ彼は、ロイヤル・アカデミーから奨学金を得て学んでいた時に、自作で「ロイヤル・フィルハーモニー賞」を獲得するなど、早くからその動向が注目されていました。しかし教育に専念し、以降の作品は公開することがなかったため、長い間彼の作品を聞く事はできなかったのです。この2枚組に収録された作品は全て世界初録音であり、このモダニストの真の姿を知ることができます。CD2の最後に置かれたボーナス・トラックの「ディヴェルティメント」は1958年のBBCラジオの貴重な記録で、「シューベルトのドイツ舞曲」にインスパイアされた作品であるとスミスが語っています。
