イングランド国教会における信仰覚醒運動である「メソジスト」の指導者だったチャールズ・ウェスレー(1717-1788)。彼の兄ジョンも同じく司祭でしたが、その信念は微妙に違っていたそうです。チャールズの一番の功績は、なんと言っても数千曲に及ぶ賛美歌の歌詞を書いたことであり、神の教えを歌うためのこれらの歌詞は神の教えを説くために大きな役割を果たしました。彼の詩に基づいて多くの賛美歌が作曲されましたが、中にはメンデルスゾーンの「天には栄え」など誰もが知っている曲も含まれています。1965年に設立されたワシントン合唱芸術協会は50年の歴史の中で、多くの賞を獲得し、また世界中のオーケストラと共演しています。また合唱を広めるためにボランティア活動にも力をいれているという団体です。
