バーバーの作品は19世紀のイディオムを用いて書かれたものが多く、批評家たちからは「時代遅れ」と揶揄されていました。しかし時を追うごとに、その独自性が評価され、現在ではアメリカ近代合唱作品の最高峰とされています。なかでもアルバムの最後に置かれた「アニュス・デイ」は有名な「弦楽のためのアダージョ」からの編曲作品であり、さまざまな場面で演奏される人気曲となっています。このアルバムでは無伴奏合唱だけでなく、ティンパニやブラス・アンサンブルを加えた曲や、ピアノ伴奏がついた曲など、バーバーの色彩豊かな合唱曲が選ばれており、合唱指揮者、作曲家ポール・スパイサーが率いる英国の精鋭「バーミンガム音楽院室内合唱団」が一糸乱れぬ見事なハーモニーを披露しています。
