The baritone, Leigh Melrose, has carved out a formidable reputation for the performance of new works and dramatic 20th-century repertoire.
Highlights include Wozzeck with Zürich Opera and Fabio Luisi, Alberich (Das Rheingold) at the Ruhrtriennale with Teodor Currentzis, Friedrich (Das Liebesverbot) at the Teatro Real, Ruprecht (The Fiery Angel) at Zürich Opera with Gianandrea Noseda, Stolzius (Die Soldaten) at the Teatro Colón and the Teatro Real, Golaud (Pelléas et Mélisande) at the Ruhrtriennale and Opera Vlaanderen, Cecil in a new production of Gloriana by David McVicar at the Teatro Real, Nekrotzar (Le Grand Macabre) at Zürich Opera, and several world premieres including Dai Fujikura’s Solaris, Luca Francesconi’s Quartett at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Polixenes in Ryan Wigglesworth’s The Winter’s Tale at English National Opera and Clov in Kurtág’s Fin de Partie at La Scala.
Future highlights see Melrose appearing at the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Norwegian National Opera and the Grand Théâtre de Genève.
