Kang Wang was born in Habin, China where his parents were both singers. He moved to Australia and studied at Queensland Conservatorium under Joseph Ward where he was encouraged to move from a baritone to tenor register. In 2011, he gained a graduate Diploma in Music Studies before studying in Manchester, England where he gained his postgraduate International Artist Diploma at the Royal Northern College of Music under Lynne Dawson. Kang Wang has sung the principal tenor rôles in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress (Queensland, 2011–12), as well as L’elisir d’amore (Manchester, 2013). In 2010, he won the People’s Choice Award of the Dame Joan Sutherland Trust.
