Gösta Winbergh studied at the Opera Conservatory in Stockholm and made his début in 1973 in Gothenburg, after which he became a member of the Royal Opera in Stockholm, where his rôles included Don Ottavio, Count Almaviva, Tamino, Nemorino and Rodolfo. Since 1981, he has been a member of the Zurich Opera, singing many of the major Mozart rôles, often in productions staged by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle and conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
Winbergh now appears at the major opera houses and festivals throughout the world. He has been appearing with great success in Wagnerian tenor rôles, including Walther in Die Meistersinger in Berlin and at Covent Garden and Erik in Der fliegende Holländer in Venice. An artist with numerous recordings to his credit, Winbergh is also a highly regarded concert soloist and recitalist.
