Hailed by the New York Times as ‘sophisticated and beguiling’ and praised by the Los Angeles Times for its ‘astonishingly vital music making’ REBEL (pronounced ‘Re-BEL’) is reputed internationally for its virtuosic, highly expressive and provocative approach to Baroque and Classical music. At Trinity Church, Wall Street, REBEL collaborates regularly with the Trinity Choir in works by Handel, Bach, Mozart and Haydn. Named after the composer Jean-Féry Rebel (1666–1747), REBEL was formed in 1991. Winner of the 1991 Van Wassenaer Competition in Holland, REBEL has performed at the Holland Festival Oude Muziek, Vienna’s Konzerthaus, La Chapelle Royale, Tage Alter Musik Regensburg, Händel Festspiele, Da Camera Society (Los Angeles), Library of Congress, Schubert Club, Music Before 1800 and the Boston and Berkeley Early Music Festivals. The ensemble made its Carnegie Hall début in 2005 with soprano Renée Fleming, and has recorded widely for European radio. Arguably the most aired American Baroque ensemble on US radio, REBEL appears on NPR’s Performance Today and MPR’s Saint Paul Sunday. In 1999 REBEL became the only period-instrument ensemble to be awarded an artist residency at National Public Radio.
