Matthias Schulz was born in 1972 in Vienna. He studied the flute with his father, Wolfgang Schulz, at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts, continuing his studies with Maxence Larrieu at the Geneva Conservatoire. He has appeared as a soloist with the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, the Linz Bruckner Orchestra, the Leipzig MDR Symphony Orchestra, the Lower Austria Tonkünstler Orchester, and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and in recitals with Jessye Norman (at the Musikverein in 1997 and at the Salzburg Festival in 2000). As a chamber-music player he has appeared in many concerts at home and abroad, and serves regularly in the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. Since the 2005/2006 season he has been a member of the Vienna State Opera theatre orchestra. Since 2004 Matthias Schulz has taught at the Tulln Music School. He plays an 18-carat gold Muramatsu flute.
