Born in 1946 in Linz, Upper Austria, Wolfgang Schulz is principal flute in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and is among the most famous and most active flautists in the world. He appears internationally as a soloist, in chamber music and in festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna Festival Weeks, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Ravenna Music Festival and Lucerne Festival Weeks. He has worked with duo partners including the pianists Helmut Deutsch, Elisabeth Leonskaja, András Schiff and Stefan Vladar. Since 1983 he has been the flautist in a wind quintet, the Vienna-Berlin Ensemble, with leading principals of the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras.

Wolfgang Schulz’s repertoire includes works from the baroque to the modern, which he has performed in nearly all the music capitals of the world, playing under conductors including Abbado, Bernstein, Böhm, Maazel, Mehta, Ozawa, Previn and Stein. He has a special interest in the work of contemporary Austrian composers, Cerha, Eder, Eröd, Urbanner and Willi have dedicated to him new compositions, of which he has given the first performances. His many recordings have won awards, including the Vienna Flötenuhr, the Edison Prize, the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d’or.

Since 1996 he has been artistic director of the Bonheur Musical festival at Lourmarin in France. Since 1979 he has taught at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts. His wide cultural experience and enthusiasm for music make him among the most important flute teachers. He also gives masterclasses in almost every continent. Wolfgang Schulz plays a 24-carat gold Muramatsu flute.
