The critically acclaimed Matosinhos String Quartet (MSQ) was created as an initiative of Matosinhos City Hall, and has enjoyed a residency in the city since 2008.
In 2014 the quartet was nominated as an ECHO Rising Star, and subsequently undertook a tour of prestigious concert halls across Europe, including the Barbican Centre, Concertgebouw, Musikverein, Elbphilharmonie and the philharmonies of Cologne and Luxembourg.
The MSQ also regularly appears in prominent venues across Portugal, and collaborates with leading musicians such as Pedro Burmester, António Rosado, Miguel Borges Coelho, Tatjana Masurenko, Máté Szücs and László Fenyö.
The MSQ’s main focus is Portuguese string quartet repertoire, and the quartet embraces music by contemporary composers, having premiered over 40 new works. The MSQ also presents core string quartet repertoire, including the complete works of Mozart and Mendelssohn. The quartet studied at the Instituto Internacional de Musica de Cámara de Madrid with Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet). Its members have also attended masterclasses with musicians from the Alban Berg, LaSalle, Emerson, Melos, Vermeer, Kopelman and Talich string quartets.
