Luis Álvarez graduated from the Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid. He has collaborated with the groups Sema, Hesperion XX, Pro Mvsica Antiqva de Madrid, La Stravaganza, Pigmalion and Lírica XVIII, touring throughout Europe and America, with many broadcasts, television appearances and recordings. He is a regular soloist with the principal Spanish orchestras and has performed at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, with the orchestras of the RAI in Italy, Radio Holland, and the Suisse Romande, among others, often singing in premières of works by contemporary composers. He takes part regularly in the opera seasons of the principal Spanish theatres, including, among others, the Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville. He has contributed to the revival of forgotten stage works and at the Teatro Lírico Nacional la Zarzuela has appeared in premières of Sin demonio no hay fortuna, by Jorge Fernández Guerra y Leopoldo Alas, Fígaro, by José Ramón Encinar, and El viajero indiscreto and La madre invita a comer, by Luis de Pablo and Vicente Molina Foix.
