Émile Waldteufel eventually, through the patronage of Edward VII, established himself in Paris and London as a leading composer of dance music – the French equivalent of Johann Strauss.

As prolific as Strauss, Waldteufel wrote some 300 dance pieces – waltzes, galops and polkas – all of which came to enjoy the greatest popularity.
