Born in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian composer, guitarist and arranger Antônio Carlos Jobim at first worked as a pianist in bars and night-clubs. His meeting in 1953 with the poet Vinícius de Morais led to an important continuing collaboration. He achieved growing fame through recordings and performance of his work by leading proponents of jazz and popular music in the United States and the work of his own Banda Nova, winning a leading position in Brazilian popular music.
