Born in Rheims, Nicolas de Grigny served there as organist at the cathedral, after a short period of similar activity in Paris.
Church Music
De Grigny’s church music is included in a volume published in 1699 containing a Mass and hymns for the principal feast days of the church year. The collection is an interesting addition to organ repertoire, with its fugues following the contrapuntal setting of a text, based on the original plainchant. He made colourful use of the possibilities of the organ, exploring in particular the use of the pedals.
