Although better known as an astronomer, the German-born William Herschel, the son of an oboist, earned his living as a musician until 1782, when a pension from George III allowed him to devote himself completely to his scientific studies. His career had brought employment as a musician in Durham and elsewhere in the north of England and subsequent rivalry and association with the Linley family in Bath. An oboist, violinist and organist, he was joined in England by various members of his family. He was knighted in 1817.
Orchestral, Chamber and Instrumental Music
Herschel wrote symphonies, concertos, violin sonatas, and organ sonatas and voluntaries. His work provides a valuable addition to the characteristic instrumental repertoire of his period.
